Bass Guitar Boot Camp

This course starts with the essentials of the bass guitar and moves steadily through playing the basics and creeps into intermediate-level approaches.  We’ll look at what and how to play bass lines across different genres. It’s absolutely fine if you’re new to the bass, maybe trying it as a second instrument, or an experienced player. Everyone in the group will be able to play the exercises and the songs together. You’ll be challenged at your level and given advice to help improve your playing.

What will we be covering?

The bass guitar is all about locking in with the drummer and putting down the groove!

At a glance

The Bass Boot Camp is like a herding together of all the essential skills needed to play great bass lines.

We’ll cover lots…

  • understanding the instrument, posture and set up
  • getting a good tone (sound)
  • LH & RH fretting / picking techniques
  • playing bass techniques – use of thumb, plectrum
  • Fingerboard knowledge
  • understanding the concepts of harmony i.e. scales, intervals, chords, arpeggios
  • how to play over chords and how to connect chords
  • how to use rhythm in your bass lines
  • how to develop your bass lines and improvise to make them sound even better
  • ear training
  • playing different styles

Some classic songs will be used throughout the day along with standard chord progressions as exercises (all spanning multiple genres). Most will be supported with backing tracks.

The overall aim is for you to be able play some cool prescribed bass lines as well as playing more freely with improvised versions. But the techniques of playing them cleanly, in time and with feel are paramount.

Who’s this session suitable for?

Beginner to low intermediate bass players.

Players of different levels will be able to learn and play along together on this course.

Beginners will be starting at the very beginning in learning all of the basics and then going on to exercise the techniques and knowledge using songs as the basis.

Low intermediate players should treat the early stages of the course as an MOT of technique and basic understanding – it’s amazing how bad habits and lack of understanding can really impede playing cleanly and subtly become a barrier to improvement;  worry not – you’ll be pushed as far as you want to go and learn how to put what you know into your practice.

And finally

Our Day-Only courses are teaching/learning/playing fests. Playing together as a group is the best, and most enjoyable, way of learning and experiencing music. As such, the course is paced to suit the group and maximise both learning and enjoying a sociable time with fellow hobby players.

The courses have limited numbers to ensure the correct tutor-to-group ratio – book early to avoid disappointment.
