Improvising on the Bass

The bass is a critical part of the rhythm section but it can also be a lead instrument. This course looks to equip bass players with the musical tools to negotiate any chord progression and play fluid, fluent bass lines as well as the ability to take a solo.

What will we be covering?

Improvisation has many definitions; let’s call it the art of composing on the spot.

For the bass guitar this involves spontaneous creativity as a rhythm player over the chord progressions as well as even stepping up and taking the lead spot with a solo.

If you know the notes in a scale and can find them on the fretboard, use the correct playing techniques, understand a bit about chords (i.e. arpeggios and simple prgressions) and hear the bassline in your head then you’re there! It sounds a lot but it’s all very achievable.

This course is focused on starting you off in the right direction and getting you playing and improvising something straight away.

Who’s this session suitable for?

Low intermediate (and above) bass players.

This course is for bass players but guitarists would gain lots from the session as well.

If you’re interested but not sure, we have a wealth of materials from previous courses available (PDFs, backing tracks and Zoom recordings of the live sessions) – contact us for more details.

Bass basics includes:

  • The notes on the fingerboard up to the 5th fret on each string
  • The major and minor scales (and their pentatonic cousins)
  • Major, minor and dom7 arpeggios
  • Understand I-IV-V chord progressions (and maybe a II and VI thrown in for good measure)

More experienced players who don’t regularly take solos should gain a lot from this session.

Materials

You’ll receive any lesson PDF(s) just before the session and we’ll make a Zoom recording of the live lesson available to you afterwards. Any backing tracks used will also be available.

Prep materials – we have a wealth of materials from our Boot Camp and Harmonic Layering courses including PDFs. backing tracks, HD snippet videos as well as Zoom recordings of the live sessions.

Homework

The session is 60 minutes long; don’t expect to master everything during the session. The tutor will go through all the key parts, demonstrating them and discussing the associated techniques and know-how.

The real work is done by you afterwards. Armed with the materials (PDFs, backing tracks and video  recording), you’ll have all the tools to work on things at your own pace.
