Little & Often #8 Chord Basics

Our Little & Often  series looks at a variety of subjects with the objective of providing ideas for warm-ups and general daily practice.

This session (#8) looks at how we build chords, name them and why some work together. We’ll keep things focused on what is practical for guitarists and avoid dry subject matter.

FOR BEGINNERS AND STRUGGLERS.

What we’ll be covering?

The basic idea behind these sessions is to review technical aspects and recommend exercises that you can build into a daily routine. This current series of four sessions covers:

#5 Barre chords and Alternatives

#6 Staying on a chord

#7 Learn a fingerpicking tune

       #8 Chord Basics

In this session (#7) we’ll be looking at the life blood of songs and the guitar i.e. chords or harmony.

Why is it important to know a bit about chords other than placing them on the neck and playing them?

Learning and understanding the hows and whys of things can greatly enhance your skills and understanding of the instrument in several ways. As part of looking under the hood at chords you’ll be delving into music theory but this is definitely not rocket science! We’ll keep it practical with the guitar always to hand.

While it’s possible to play guitar without knowing music ‘theory’, learning it can significantly help you understand what you’re playing rather than just playing chord progressions from a chart or TAB. Knowledge really is power.

The overall objective(s) of the sessions is to spell out practical exercises for you to build into your daily practice.
