What we’ll be covering in this Session

Here we’ll be learning sections of some of The Eagles‘ classic songs and delving into the techniques required to play them properly. The sections of each of the following songs will be covered in detail:

TAKE IT EASY
This is a great song for practising simple diatonic chords but with the aim of securing a solid feel in
your strumming hand. Notice the way we have scored it has you rotating between low strings a high
strings. This is what gives the strumming its movement and life. Other points of interest:

  • The chords marked in blue are all pushed chords. This is where we are playing the chords change on the and of a beat. Again, this technique creates a feeling of moving forward.
  • In the intro, the pinky finger remains down on the 3rd fret top E string G, creating a pedal note that ties the chords together.
  • Think about the velocity of each strum. Notice the accent markings in the intro that highlight the pushed chords. These accents then move on to beat one in the link to give the feeling of stability in the piece. Listen to the song and you’ll hear what I mean.

LIFE IN THE FAST LANE
This is one of those classic Joe Walsh riffs that takes a simple rhythmic pattern but plays with the position of the riff within the bar so that it feels really original, cool and with movement. Utilise all the slurs, slides and 1/4 tone and 1/2 tone bends to replicate Joe’s part as closely as possible.
The verse part brings in some traid shape high position chords. Keep the strumming hand relaxed and aim to be accurate in how many strings you strum; if not, your delivery will appear muddy.
If playing an electric guitar I’d suggest using the bridge pickup with the tones rolled off slightly.

HOTEL CALIFORNIA
This piece is one of the most famous songs of all time with one of the most played introductions.
We’ve given you two versions, one without and one with a capo. Work on your fluent movement between the chord shapes and remember that as you are finger picking, you may not need the whole chord shape down at once. Try and ensure you use the suggested picking fingers as this will help with fluency.
